Kyle Allen, MD was awarded a $10,000 grant from the FirstMerit Foundation to fund the development and production of a palliative care educational video and learning packets focusing on teaching community care givers to assist chronically ill patients and families in making advance care planning decisions that are centered on their values and life experiences.There are currently no educational programs available to instruct community caregivers how to promote advance care planning in a community setting. This project is an off-shoot of the Promoting Effective Advance Care in the Elderly (PEACE) Trial, funded by the National Palliative Care Research Center, and is a collaboration among Summa Health System, The University of Akron, Kent State University, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and the Area Agency on Aging 10B, Inc.
Meagan Celmer, MDwas awarded $15,500 by the Summa Foundation for “The Effects of Latisse on Periocular Skin Pigmentation.”
Deepak Edward, MD, FACS served as senior academic consultant in the Glaucoma division at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Winter 2010.
Nancy Istenes, DO was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Women’s Board of Summa Health System for “Hand Hygiene in Health Care: The Role of the Patient”. The focus of hand hygiene research to date has been on contamination rates and ways to improve hand hygiene compliance by health care providers. The idea that a patient’s own contaminated hands may contribute to a nosocomial infection has been virtually unstudied. For this study, we will culture the hands of 100 patients for common pathogens. This project is in collaboration with GOJO Industries of Akron.
Joel W. Hughes, PhD, Mary Dolansky, RN received an RO-1 grant in the amount of $2,762,006 for “Cognitive Impairment and Self-Management in Adults with Heart Failure.”
Hiroshi Nakamura, PhDhas been named inventor of US Patent Application 12/761, 982 and PCT Application PCT/US10/31433, both filed on April 16, 2010 and entitled “Use of Transforming Growth Factor-B Receptor Inhibitors to Suppress Ocular Scarring.”
William D. Smucker, MD, CMD was presented the “2010 Dr. Edward S. Schneir Award for Excellence in Geriatric Care.” The award is presented to an individual who works to improve the health, quality of care, and functional status of older adults and their caregivers through research, education, or innovative clinical consultative services. The recipient must have had a positive impact on programs and services for seniors in our community. Dr. Smucker has contributed to the care of elders at Summa for over 20 years through his teaching, clinical care and active research. Congratulations Dr. Smucker!
Vivian von Gruenigen, MD was recently featured in the Akron Beacon Journal. The health bulletin highlighted the fact that endometrial cancer survivors often have a high risk of premature death from other health problems. Dr. Von Gruenigen’s research found only 1% of 120 endometrial cancer patients followed the three American Cancer Society recommendations for survivors: don't smoke, eat at least five servings of fruit and vegetables/day and participate in 150 minutes/week of moderate to strenuous physical activity. About 22% didn't follow any of the guidelines. Dr. Von Gruenigen is seeking funding for a multicenter study of effectiveness using teams of physical therapists, nutritionists and psychologists to support endometrial cancer patients and educate them regarding healthier life choices.
