Announcements

Michael Askew, PhD, was honored at the 63rd annual Akron Council of Engineering and Scientific Societies (ACESS) on November 4th as the Distinguished Award Council recipient. This is a lifetime achievement award recognizing significant impact on the ACESS, local science and engineering communities.

Heather Holmes, MLIS completed a Biomedical Informatics fellowship at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, MA.  The fellowship is designed to cover biomedical informatics from a wide range of areas including database design, disaster informatics, human-computer interface, genetics & genomics, Meaningful Use & electronic health records (EHR), clinical research informatics, telemedicine and Web 2.0 & social networking.  Faculty for the courses were from NIH, Vanderbilt, University of Pittsburgh, Harvard, Columbia and the National Library of Medicine (NLM).  The fellowship accepts 30 participants each year from hundreds of applicants and is entirely funded by the NLM, and co-sponsored by the MBL.

The Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron (ABIA) has received a $2.6+ million research and commercialization grant for biomedical sensor technology from The Wright Center for Sensor Systems Engineering (WCSSE, headquartered at Cleveland State University) through the Ohio Third Frontier initiative. The grant to ABIA is focused on patient-centered innovation and commercialization meant to improve patient care by developing new sensor technologies that diagnose medical conditions and monitor patient health. The project – “Diagnostic Engineering Technologies for Evaluating Connective Tissues” (DETECT) – concentrates on patient-centered projects including creating sensor materials to solve issues relating to bladder control, wound healing, diabetic foot ulcers, skin health on amputee patients and pathomechanics of connective vascular tissues. Through these projects, ABIA and its partners hope to increase patients’ abilities to maintain a near-normal quality of life.

The Department of Family Medicine was the recipient of the Summa 2010 Group Quality Improvement Award which recognizes a group of individuals who have made a significant improvement in quality. Nominees for the Quality Improvement Award must meet and exceed standards that are consistent with Summa’s mission of providing quality patient care. The award consisted of a $1000 cash award and plaque.

In August 2010 the Department of Family Medicine achieved official Certification from The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) on behalf of the Diabetes Physician Recognition Program. NCQA's voluntary Recognition Programs recognize high-performing clinicians & practices in clinical quality & care coordination. These standards will promote the adoption of strategies that will improve care, enhance service and reduce costs, such as paying providers based on performance, leveraging the Web to give consumers more information, disease management and physician-level measurement. The certification period extends for three years. For more information on NCQA Recognition Programs, please visit http://www.ncqa.org/ Congratulations!!!

The Health Research and Education Trust presented The Circle of Life™ awards to eight programs throughout the country, including awarding the Citation of Honor to Summa’s Palliative Care and Hospice Services. The awards honor best practices in coordinated patient care continuum through end-of-life care. Congratulations on this prestigious recognition!

Patrick Palmieri, PhD, was a Deputy on the Program Committee for the Annual Meeting of the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies that took place November 3-6, 2010.

Steve Schmidt, PhD, has been named an inaugural member of the editorial board for Cell Medicine: Part B of Cell Transplantation, an online-only, open access journal. The journal publishes research papers that have direct clinical relevance and report on translation of experimental data to the clinical setting. To access, go to http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/cog/cm.

Kirk A. Stiffler, MD, Associate Director of the Emergency Medicine Research Center, earned his Master’s in Public Health (MPH) from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in May 2010. Congratulations Dr. Stiffler!

Scott Wilber, MD and the Emergency Medicine Department and Research Staff were recently recognized as a National High Enrollment Site after only 3 months of enrolling subjects for the NIH study “Protocolized Care for Early Septic Shock” trial.

Two applications for patents have been submitted on behalf of Summa researchers.  Rami Ahmed, DO & Scott Atkinson have developed the PacerMan device that will aid in training physicians in placing transveneous pacemakers in patients.  The device is a high-fidelity transvenous pacemaker simulation task trainer that allows for the placement of a real bedside transvenous pacemaker while using an external pacing generator that will override the existing dysrhythmia on a simulation monitor.  Mark Kovacik & Don Noe have developed a database currently being used with incoming STEMI patients that has reduced the "door to balloon" time by approximately 50%. It helps manage the patients from the time they reach the hospital until they reach the cath lab.  They've even implemented it in the EMT vehicles and have been able to show a marked reduction in time these patients take to get to the cath lab as well.

The Summa Center for Clinical Trials (SCCT) is a centralized resource that supports the conduct of investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical research trials. The facility is co-sponsored by the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron (ABIA).  An Open House was held on November 5th and approximately 70 attendees came to tour the new facility and to learn about the resources available.  The SCCT is located on the Summa Akron City Hospital Campus, Professional Center North, 75 Arch St., Suite 105.  Contact Jennifer Oettinger for more information.

New Research Poster Templates are being posted on Summa@Work. You can find them under Forms > Corporate Communications Forms > Scientific Poster Templates.  Contact Steve Getch with questions.
