I was recently asked to make a presentation at a "Talk with Tom" meeting about Research at Summa. Preparing a talk for this audience of Summa employees, with their varied backgrounds and interests, was especially interesting and challenging. In my remarks I tried to articulate a "value proposition" for research at Summa. In marketing terms, the value proposition is what a customer gets for his money or time. For Summa's clinical research program the value proposition we offer is that our research results and quality data will translate into improved clinical care decisions. Summa is, indeed, uniquely poised as a community-based academic health center. We are interposed in the middle of the research continuum with basic biomedical benchtop/laboratory-based research at one end of the continuum and public and community health at the opposite end. Many of Summa's clinical research investigators translate the outcomes of basic science research into thoughtful clinical protocols that can evaluate new treatment efficacies. Other investigators compare the relative effectiveness of established therapies or of unique approaches to patient care or study models of chronic care to impact the health of specific populations. The scope of clinical research is vast, but influencing quality patient care is always the goal. I think those attending "Talk with Tom" understood.
